Hamburger SV: Steffen Baumgart becomes new coach

HSV gets a coach who knows the league

Cologne's coach Steffen Baumgart is to become the new coach of Hamburger SV. This was announced by the second division club on Tuesday. The 50-year-old will sign a contract until 2024.

Baumgart succeeds Tim Walter, who was released on Monday after a 2-1 defeat against Erzgebirge Aue. HSV is currently in ninth place in the 2nd Bundesliga with 33 points from 21 games.

Baumgart has been coaching 1. FC Köln since 2021. With the Billy Goats, he finished seventh in the Bundesliga last season and reached the final of the DFB Cup, which they lost to RB Leipzig on penalties.

Before that, the former professional worked for SC Paderborn, with whom he sensationally promoted to the Bundesliga in 2019. After relegation in 2020, he left the East Westphalians in the summer of 2021.

Baumgart is known for his emotional and passionate style of play. He is considered a motivator who can inspire his players. HSV hopes that he will lead the club back to the Bundesliga.

Reactions to the commitment

The reactions to Baumgart's commitment are positive. HSV sports director Jonas Boldt said: "We are very happy that we were able to win Steffen Baumgart for HSV. He is a coach who knows the league and knows how to lead a team to success."

Baumgart himself said: "I am very much looking forward to the task at HSV. HSV is a big club with a great tradition. I am convinced that we can achieve a lot together."

Chances of promotion

With Baumgart, HSV's chances of promotion have increased significantly. The 50-year-old is a proven coach who has already shown that he can lead a team to success.

However, HSV will have to improve their performance in order to achieve promotion. The team has been too inconsistent this season and has often lost points against weaker opponents.

If HSV can improve their performance, then they have a good chance of promotion with Baumgart. The 50-year-old is a motivator who can inspire his players. He is also a tactically astute coach who knows how to get the best out of his team.
